Day 24 - Santorini in winter...with a toddler: Tuesday

Tuesday was looking much brighter!

We started out in Fira.  Ramesh walked down to the port (with his still very broken foot!), and took the cable car back up, while Jackson and I roamed around the narrow streets peeking into the few open shops.  We kept busy by chasing cats and following dogs, toddling up and down the rocky stairs, and trying on sunglasses.

We did find an open pharmacy and picked up some cough medicine for Jackson...he still was not feeling well.

After Fira, we headed to Oia (pronounced EE-Uh).  What a cute town.  We could have used the stroller on the top level path, but Ramesh opted to carry him instead so that we could explore the little paths up and down the hill.

Again, it is off-season, so most of the little shops were closed, but some were open.  My favorite part was at the very end, there are castle ruins.  There is a wall with windows and a doorway, looking out into the sea.  It was incredible, and I'm disappointed that we just did not get any good shots.  There actually was a photographer with his tripod, and his model...with her chiffon blowing in the wind.  I bet he got some good shots.  We did not.

Are you able to envision how beautiful this was???

Perhaps we can use this one for this year's Christmas card...NOT.

farewell Oia, time for lunch

We found a tiny little place in Fira for lunch called Salt and Pepper.  It is a husband and wife team.  The food was delicious, and the host very gracious.  She was tickled that Jackson is skilled with his tab, and that we let him watch Elmo at mealtime. (It keeps him busy, allowing the adults to enjoy their food.)

We poked around the island a bit more.  We stopped in the Carrefour on the way to the lighthouse near Akotiri (follow signs that say Pharos) to watch the sunset.  (In summer, Oia is the best spot for sunsets, but in winter, it is the lighthouse - clear views of the sun sinking into the sea)  We bought a bottle of wine and thought we could sit and enjoy at least one sunset before we left the island.  We made our way to the lighthouse with only minutes to spare.  It was freezing and the wind was blowing like crazy.  At the top of the hill, we had some amazing views.  Ramesh snapped a few photos.  We kept going toward the lighthouse.  When we finally jumped out of the car, and scrambled over the rocks to see the view...we saw the sun sink into the CLOUDS!!

Needless to say, we jumped back into the warm car, never even opening the bottle of wine.

For early morning departures, ask the hotel to prepare a boxed breakfast.
