Meteora, Greece

Our first adventure was to see the Monasteries in Meteora, Greece.

Monastery at Meteora, Greece
Meteora Monestary

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Metéora - literally "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" - is a formation of immense monolithic pillars and huge rounded boulders dominate the local area.
It is also associated with one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second in importance only to Mount Athos.  The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece.

The monasteries are open from 9am to 4 or 5pm, local time. We got in 3 monasteries Saturday afternoon, and two more on Sunday morning. After climbing to the top of this final one, we treated ourselves to some yummy frozen Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries in the cute little city center. We stayed at Hotel Meteora, and had dinner at Restaurant Meteora. Bring your walking shoes. (and maybe even your camping gear for a real adventure!)

Jackson was pooped after a long day of exploring

Nalan still had plenty of energy

We happened upon the Greek festival - I think they said St. ACHILLIOS. Everyone was dressed in their costumes with lots of dancing.  What a fun discovery!

Beautiful roses everywhere!
